{"id":116,"date":"2007-05-06T12:33:37","date_gmt":"2007-05-06T20:33:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/infmom.net\/journal\/?p=116"},"modified":"2020-02-05T11:44:10","modified_gmt":"2020-02-05T19:44:10","slug":"difficult-lyrical-reading","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/infmom.net\/journal\/?p=116","title":{"rendered":"difficult, lyrical reading"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I loved the movie &#8220;Smoke Signals&#8221; and always planned to read the book it was based on, which is <em>The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven<\/em> by Sherman Alexie.<\/p>\n<p>I finally got a copy from the public library and settled in to read it.\u00c2\u00a0 I was surprised that it was a collection of short stories rather than a full length book.\u00c2\u00a0 Once I got started reading the stories, I could see where the movie script came from.<\/p>\n<p>Alexie is a wonderfully talented writer, but I found the book very difficult to read.\u00c2\u00a0 Not because of the writer but because of the subject.<\/p>\n<p>Sherman Alexie&#8217;s life was shaped by an alcoholic parent, as mine was.\u00c2\u00a0 I think all of us &#8220;ACOA&#8221; (adult children of alcoholic) people have similar experiences.\u00c2\u00a0 Which makes it hard, sometimes, to read about someone else&#8217;s journeys through the same things.<\/p>\n<p>This isn&#8217;t a long book, but I kept having to put it down and come back to it another day.\u00c2\u00a0 Still, I would recommend it, for the lyrical skill of the author and for anyone who liked &#8220;Smoke Signals.&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0 If you&#8217;re an ACOA, though, you may not be able to read through it all at once.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/redirect.html%3FASIN=6305428417%26tag=infmomnet-20%26lcode=xm2%26cID=2025%26ccmID=165953%26location=\/o\/ASIN\/6305428417%253FSubscriptionId=1N9AHEAQ2F6SVD97BE02\" title=\"Click and drag this image to the post editor\" class=\"broken_link\"><\/a> <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I loved the movie &#8220;Smoke Signals&#8221; and always planned to read the book it was based on, which is The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven by Sherman Alexie.
