{"id":206,"date":"2008-02-28T14:07:01","date_gmt":"2008-02-28T22:07:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/infmom.net\/journal\/?p=206"},"modified":"2008-02-28T14:07:01","modified_gmt":"2008-02-28T22:07:01","slug":"one-two-free","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/infmom.net\/journal\/?p=206","title":{"rendered":"one, two, free&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/infmom.net\/images\/tomterrific.jpg\" alt=\"Tom Terrific and Mighty Manfred\" align=\"left\" border=\"0\" height=\"339\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"0\" width=\"330\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Tom Terrific used via Creative Commons license from the artist<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I was, my mother always said, one of Captain Kangaroo&#8217;s first audience.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s probably true; we did have a TV in 1955 when we lived in a housing project somewhere near New York City while my dad worked on his Ph.D. at Columbia.\u00c2\u00a0 (I wish I knew where that place was&#8211;it&#8217;s the only childhood address I can&#8217;t remember, other than we were in apartment 3E.)\u00c2\u00a0 The TV most likely belonged to, or was on loan from, my dad&#8217;s parents, since it was one of those huge cabinet models with two front doors.<\/p>\n<p>One of the features in the Captain Kangaroo show was a cartoon called Tom Terrific.\u00c2\u00a0 Tom Terrific could transform himself into anything, and he was almost always accompanied in his travels by Mighty Manfred the Wonder Dog (who was a doggie doofus from the get-go).<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t remember a lot about those cartoons, but I do remember one in which an elephant who was supposed to remember everything, forgot the combination to a lock of some kind.\u00c2\u00a0 And it wasn&#8217;t till Tom said something about &#8220;being the one to free them&#8221; that the elephant realized that the combination was &#8220;one two three.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>All of this is by way of my musing that we modern-day folk have to remember a lot of combinations, with far worse mnemonics than the elephant got.\u00c2\u00a0 I personally don&#8217;t have much trouble remembering all my passwords, which is why I never write them down.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s not so easy for other members of the family, which is why I ended up having to unsnarl the bank web site today.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not supposed to be safe to write down passwords&#8211;but if you can&#8217;t remember them, what else is there to do?\u00c2\u00a0 I know there is plenty of password-keeper software out there, but you still have to remember the password to the &#8220;lockbox&#8221; they create.\u00c2\u00a0 And if the password for that has to be easy to remember (or guess) then it&#8217;s not particularly safe.<\/p>\n<p>I wonder if it&#8217;s a matter of brain chemistry or brain priorities that produce some people with the ability to remember just about everything, and others who fall into the &#8220;CRS&#8221; category without half trying?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tom Terrific used via Creative Commons license from the artist I was, my mother always said, one of Captain Kangaroo&#8217;s first audience.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s probably true; we did have a TV in 1955 when we lived in a housing project somewhere &hellip; <a href=\"http:\/\/infmom.net\/journal\/?p=206\">Continue reading <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[8],"tags":[15,27],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"http:\/\/infmom.net\/journal\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/206"}],"collection":[{"href":"http:\/\/infmom.net\/journal\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"http:\/\/infmom.net\/journal\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/infmom.net\/journal\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/infmom.net\/journal\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=206"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"http:\/\/infmom.net\/journal\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/206\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"http:\/\/infmom.net\/journal\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=206"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/infmom.net\/journal\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=206"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/infmom.net\/journal\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=206"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
